If you're a University of Minnesota person, come to a USlam event! We put on slams and host workshops. You can become an officer if you want, just talk to us! Even if you don't go to the University of Minnesota, you are still welcome to slam, provided there are spots on the list, which there are. We post all our events on our Facebook, so like us to see when the slams are!
U of M people should also check out Voices Merging, our student org that puts on a monthly open mic, where you can see poetry, music, dancing, all kinds of stuff!
Pangea World Theater is one of the most positive, nurturing environments I've ever been a part of, and they do revolutionary work in theater. Their mission is to tell human stories and bring global and multi-disciplinary diversity to the theaters. They use art as a means to re-center those who are marginalized and fight for justice and equity.
One of my favorite poets Ryka Aoki has a novel coming out! She is a poet and performance artist whom I met while interning at Pangea World Theater's Morphologies: Queer Performance Festival in November 2012, which we co-produced with 20% Theatre Company and RARE Productions. To this day, my friends and I still talk about how great her show was. She is also a wonderful human being. You can read her poetry and essays in her book Seasonal Velocities. It was published by Trans-Genre Press, which publishes works by trans and gender variant writers and supports transgender artists, including musicians and performers as well as writers.
It's been in the Twin Cities for a long time, but if you haven't been to Balls Cabaret, check it out! It's every Saturday at midnight at the Southern Theater. People bring a lot of new work there, even established poets like Cynthia French, who I met there! You never know what you're gonna see at Balls. It's also somewhere performers are required to be sober, so it's a good place for anyone in recovery looking for somewhere to share their work or just go to an awesome, sometimes goofy, sometimes touching open mic.
If you wanna know more about the art and non-poetry stuff that I do personally, I'm part of Medusa Creations, where I make and sell pottery and paintings with my mom and friend Lucia Bennett. (Lucia does the paintings, and we all do the pottery.)
Also, I think everyone, especially writers, should watch Brené Brown's TED Talk, "The Power of Vulnerability."
