Sundays, 12-2 at the Fox Egg Gallery in Minneapolis, I founded and run a weekly poetry workshop called Well-Placed Commas (we don’t actually care about commas, don’t worry). This is a 16+ space, and we do a lot of generative writing, as well as editing, as well as just having a great old time. For more info, check out my website (linked at the bottom) or Word Sprout’s calendar.
I’m on the Twin Cities Adult Nationals Team, so come check me out in Oakland August 6-10 for NPS if you’re up for it.
I’m also in a million shows for fundraising for Nationals, most of which are at either Kieran’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis or Camp Bar in St. Paul. All those dates are on my website as well under the “Shows” section.
Oh! I also have a chapbook called “The Taste of Iron” if you want to throw money at me for it (it’s all in the website, folks).
I also do music on the YouTubes and in the cities and blah-de-blah enough about me. Here are some organizations and some people that are my favourite:
OUTspoken! run by my friends Nik Martell and Paul Canada. It is literally the best thing ever. It’s a queer open mic with awesome features. Fox Egg. 2nd Wednesday of the month. I am there pretty much every single show. For real, go to this.
Everything Word Sprout ever does ever. Duh. Just jaunt on over to the calendar, and you won’t be bored any night of the week.
Visible Bodies is a transgender visibility project I’m a part of, and they’re doing awesome work. Check that out/contribute funds if you’ve got them!
Another project I’m a part of (ugh I’m still talking about me, but I promise this project is great so stick with me) is 50 Shades of Gender created by my friend Riley. It’s another way of trying to raise awareness about transgender people and letting our narratives speak for themselves. It’s super vital that marginalized groups are allowed to represent themselves, and these projects are giving platforms.
20% Theatre Company. I wrote and performed the closing act for a show with them this winter called “The Naked I: Insides Out,” and let me tell you, this is a phenomenal organization. They are committed to bringing in cis women, trans* people, and queer people primarily as part of the (PAID $$$) creative process in theatre. This means writers, directors, actors, sound techs, the whole shebang, all run by people who are non-cisgender heterosexual males. They have been so good to me. You can give them money or attend a show by visiting their website!
Aaaand here’s my website so you can keep in touch with everything! I love you all! http://ollieschminkey.weebly.com/
