My original motive for creating OUTspoken! was that I felt and still feel like most queer spaces heavily revolve around drinking or hooking up. I also wanted to create a place where queer people and allies could talk about real issues facing the community using art, so we could have real discussions after.
OUTspoken! has been a dream come true for me. Every month, Nikolas and I don our best costumes (cheap and sparkly drag) and perform skits, games, and interpretive dance numbers between sets that make people laugh, but also educate them on injustices in our community and opportunities for progress. I have seen people have real conversations about acts they've seen, I've seen people share incredibly personal stories in a room where they felt safe, and I've seen friendships and communities form. OUTspoken! is so much more than an open mic. It's a sparkly ball of fabulous wrapped in important issues and has room for everybody, no matter what their identity may be. Find out more on Facebook.
