We're super jazz hand excited to have Lewis Mundt joining Word Sprout and producing the New Sh!t Show. Let's see what he has to say about it:
April 18th (7:30 p.m., Fox Egg Gallery) is the first installment of The New Shit Show Minneapolis, Wordsprout’s latest performance venture, and I don’t think I could be more excited to be producing it.
I’m excited because the New Shit Show has one rule: Everything on stage must be 100% new work – the new shit.
Before I say anything else, let me say that I know there is undeniable joy in going out to a show and hearing your favorite poem. Of course there is. But love it all you want you’d still be sick of hearing it if you heard it every month for years.
Nic Alea and Sam Sax founded the original New Shit Show in California to keep that from happening. We as performers and audience members can come to crave safety – the repetition, the easy poem, the one we know by heart and can put up in any room to guaranteed applause. Not at the New Shit Show. Poets are welcome to the stage, but only if they bring something brand new.
It makes sense to me: We’re creative people – why not push ourselves to create? There must’ve been something to it, because the New Shit Show has expanded, including side events at the National Poetry Slam and regular satellite shows in Austin, Boston, and now our own in Minneapolis.
In starting NSSMPLS (I promise I’m not going to start calling it that), I wanted to take Sam and Nic’s “new poetry mission” one step further and open it up to all genres. For example, our first event on April 18th has a professional storyteller (Amy Salloway), a storyteller-plus-musician (Taylor Tower plus Andrew Foreman), a loop-pedal-poet-and-musician (Taylor Seaberg), and a writer who’s going to be accompanied by two other voices for an experimental theater piece (Timothy Otte and crew.) Oh, and there are four open mic slots.
Because new, weird shit is fun, and we know it.
Because Minnesota isn’t just part of an incredibly vibrant arts community – it is one, and we know it.
In starting the New Shit Show I’m hoping to encourage even more of that, and I’m happy every time someone asks me what the show’s going to be like and I get to say, “I have no idea, but I promise you’ve never seen it before.”
The New Shit Show Minneapolis takes place every third Friday of the month at Fox Egg Gallery (3730 Chicago Avenue South). Doors and open mic sign-up at 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m., $5-10 sliding scale admission.
